Book Display

Dear NASSS Members & Conference Attendees:

If you have a book, monograph, or manuscript that you wish to have displayed at NASSS then please get in touch withy our editor and have them send a copy or copies (and any flyers, etc.) to Brian Wilson at the address below. When you talk to them please ask them to also send along any additional books that they think might be relevant for individuals attending the conference. Please stress that not only new books are displayed but that older ones and classics are also displayed since we have many new members and graduate students who are seeking both textbooks and monographs for use in their classes. NASSS is seeking any texts, monographs, manuscripts, workbooks, etc. which focus on any aspect of sport.

I sent an email about 6-8 weeks ago to a large number of publishers but these are directed at corporate offices and Inever know exactly where they go.

Please also forward them the information below.

Thank for your assistance.

DATE & LOCATION:   Renaissance Vancouver Hotel Harbourside, Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA, November 1-4, 2006. NASSS is seeking any texts, monographs, workbooks, etc. which focus on any aspect of sport.

ATTENDEES:   Approximately 400 individuals who teach in the area of the Sociology of Sport and other sport related courses, such as Sport Psychology, Sport History, Gender and Sport, Drugs and Sport, Race and Sport, Culture and Sport, Youth Sport, Socialization and Sport, Olympic Sport, International Sport, Economics of Sport, History and Sport, and many others. Some of the attendees are new faculty or graduate students who are now teaching in these areas and are unaware of some of the older book and monographs that are still in print but often not sent for display. I am often asked about why these books are not available. Conference attendees range from some new instructors to full professors, so there is a need to for a wide range of even some older texts and monographs that the newer instructors and faculty members may find useful for their courses. So please, send as many books as you have in your database that might be of interest. Anything on the Olympics would be very relevant since the Winter Olympics at Whistler will only be two years away.

WHERE IS THE EXHIBIT:   The exhibit area is adjacent to the registration desk and affords all conference attendees an excellent opportunity to review your organization’s publications. The exhibit area will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (the primary focus of the exhibit is Thursday & Friday), November 2-4, 2006. There is NO CHARGE for sending books, catalogues, etc. for inclusion in our combined book exhibit.

SPONSORING ACTIVITIES:   In previous years, various publishers have also taken the opportunity to sponsor the Wednesday or Friday night reception or one of the morning coffee breaks or afternoon softdrink break. If theywould be interested in sponsoring either of these events, please contact me at: Dean Purdy, NASSS Site Coordinator, Box 291, Bowling Green, OH, 43402.

Publishers may also purchase select to set up a display at the conference or to purchase advertising space in the Final Program. These costs are: (1) $120 for registration; (2) $250 for dedicated space in the book display area (as many tables as needed); (3) $150 for a full-page ad (8 1/2” x 11”) in the conference program; and (4) $50 for a flyer placed in each attendee’s registration packet. The price for this entire package is $570. The display, full-page advertisement and flyer may also be purchased separately. The display area is central to the meeting rooms where attendees gather before and after the various conference sessions. If you are interested in any of these options, please contact me at the address displayed at the end of this letter. The Program is set to go to print around first week of October. Please inform me ASAP if you wish to participate in our annual meeting. Send advertising materials to me and books, monographs, and manuscripts for display to Brian Wilson at the address listed below.

Exhibit materials for the combined book exhibit (books, price lists, catalogs, order forms, etc.) should be shipped so that they arrive by October 27, 2006. This affords adequate time to mark the materials and arrange the display. I would appreciate it if you would please email both Professor Brian Wilson, the local site coordinator (address on following page), and myself if you are sending materials to the conference.

Please mail all materials to:

Message to Session Organizers II

Dear Session Organizer,

When you have decided which abstracts you will accept for your session, please take the following steps:

  1. Notify those who have submitted the abstracts whether or not their abstract has been accepted.
  2. If there are any abstracts that you do not accept for your session, be sure to forward those to me as soon as possible so that I can determine whether they fit into another session. All abstracts must be submitted or returned no later than July 15.
  3. Use the online submission form for session organizers on which you should enter the names of each abstract submission that you have accepted and author(s), in the order in which they will appear in your session. (This link will appear on this page in the very near future.)

If you have submitted a Session Proposal that has been approved by the Program Chair, please read the Message to Session Organizers for your duties and responsibilites as a session organizer.

Call for Sessions

The 27th annual conference of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) will be held November 1-4, 2006 at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel-Harbourside in Vancouver, CAN. The theme for this year’s conference is “Re-Imagining Community / Re(En)Visioning Sport.” Those interested in organizing a session should submit a session proposal by May 5, 2006 to the program chair, Nancy Spencer, via the Session Proposal form.

This year’s theme of “Re-Imagining Community/Re(En)Visioning Sport” challenges us to re-imagine how NASSS as an organization can continue to develop as a community of scholars that welcomes a diverse range of scholarship encompassing various theoretical, (inter)national, social, and political perspectives. Just as we consider ways of re-imagining NASSS as a welcoming interpretive and analytical community, we also wish to interrogate ways that we can re-envision sport as a site of greater inclusivity. In this spirit we also welcome sessions which are not directly related to the conference theme. Sessions that enhance interdisciplinary conversations and encourage new ways of thinking about sport are particularly welcome. While we wish to solicit session titles with very broad themes as in the past (e.g., “Sport and the Media”), the program committee is also interested in securing sessions that promote specific or focused content related to the theme. For example, session organizers might focus on various “Interpretive Communities and Sport,” or “Communities of Practice in Sport.”

For further information, please contact Program Chair Nancy Spencer or a member of the program committee:

An Early Reminder:     A second call seeking papers and posters will begin shortly after the 2006 sessions have been proposed and finalized. The final deadline for submitting paper abstracts and poster abstracts will be June 30, 2006. Look for the “2006 Call for Paper and Poster Abstracts” as well as more details about keynote speakers and conference activities in early May on the NASSS conference website.
