26 Oct 09: Updated conference program: Program at a glance (doc)  ::  Full Program (pdf)
7 Oct 09: Updated conference program info: Program at a glance (doc)  ::  Sessions (pdf)
Please, DO NOT contact Geneviève Rail to request changes. Putting together a program is extremely complicated and the Program Committee expects presenters to adjust to the program as it would be IMPOSSIBLE for the people responsible for the program to adjust to the presenters’ schedules. Please know that conference topics have been spread around during the 3 days. For instance, multiple sessions on topics such as women/gender & sport (15 sessions), obesity (8), environment (5), media (7), peace/dev (5), race (13), etc., have been distributed so that there is one session after the other on the same topic so that 2 race and sport sessions, for example, would not be in concurrent sessions. However, we have distinct NASSS patterns (for example for women/gender sessions and race/racialization sessions so because we only have 11 time-spots, we are bound to have sessions on the same topic that are competing against one another. There are also difficulties related to people who are active during the conference (as discussant, presider, organizer, presenter, co-author on a paper by a colleague or student they would like to support). We try to accommodate their multiple roles (not put them in a situation where they have to choose between roles because of 2 concurrent sessions). Finally, we have the additional variable of room size: we try to accommodate sessions where we expect a large audience and find suitable rooms for sessions where we expect a more modest audience. All in all, we do hope people will appreciate the nice problem of putting together such a huge program and will not request changes.
28 Sep 09: List of accepted abstracts for the 2009 NASSS conference is now available, linked below. PLEASE read the first page of the document for an explanation of the list and for instructions for any further action that is needed. A preliminary program with session schedules will be posted in the very near future.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS (THURS MORN)
- Wendy Frisby, University of British Columbia
- "From Critique to Action: Exemplars from Research on Poverty, Inclusion, and Physical Activity"
- Dr. Wendy Frisby is a Professor in the School of Human Kinetics in the Faculty of Education and the former Chair of Women?s and Gender Studies (2004-2009) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. The overall goal of her research program is to determine how those who have the least access to sport and recreation can become more involved as decision makers and participants to promote health, policy change, and other outcomes. For over a decade, she has conducted feminist participatory action research (FPAR) with citizens and practitioners to analyze how the social and living conditions experienced by those living in poverty, which are often exacerbated by existing policies and structures in community sport and recreation, create barriers to participation. The community-based organizations that she has helped to form have received awards for their efforts to promote inclusion.
- In her presentation, she will reflect on the ’action’ component of her research program. Dr. Frisby will demonstrate how 'action' has been under-theorized, discuss issues related to action-taking, and challenge researchers to consider their roles in social change and transformation. She has published work on this topic in traditional academic outlets (e.g., Sage Handbook of Action Research, Action Research, Canadian Journal of Public Health, Canadian Women’s Studies) and has made concerted efforts to disseminate the results and recommendations more broadly to increase knowledge transfer and uptake (e.g., government and professional reports, public workshops and presentations).

THURSDAY EVENING OUTING
we’ve planned a more formalized/organized evening and itinerary:
- Dinner: walk down Kent to Somerset then Preston (these are very safe streets, you can walk alone or in groups)
- either in the Thai or Greek restaurants on Kent
- or a cheaper meal in the Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown/Somerset (http://www.ottawachinatown.ca/?act=home)
- or in the Italian restaurants on Preston (also a great Thai restaurant “green papaya” or a great Turkish restaurant nearer Carling) (http://www.prestonstreet.com/)
- Social event: meet at the Heart and Crown on Preston around 9ish (http://www.irishvillage.ca/preston.aspx)
- We have booked the “Snug Pub”, a room with it’s own bar at the back of the pub and we have all night; a good place to socialize and mingle with other NASSSers in a fun but quieter environment
- After 10:00, there will be a live band in the front area of the pub. You’ll thus have a choice to stay in the Snug Pub to mingle or to move to the front room for a livelier atmosphere.

- take a short taxi ride (about 10-13$; 4 people can share a taxi) to the “vieux Hull” to live a francophone experience on Laval Street (restaurants: Pizzazza, Troquet; pubs: Café des 4 jeudis, Troquet, Ou-Quoi, Pêle-Mêle; nightclub: le Bop)

ALAN INGHAM KEYNOTE ADDRESS (SAT MORN)
- Pirkko Markula, Univeristy of Alberta, Canada
- "Body-Movement-Change: Reflections through Foucault and Deleuze"
- Pirkko Markula’s research interests include poststructuralist, particularly Foucauldian and Deleuzian, analysis of women’s fitness and dance, ethnography, autoethnography, and performance ethnography.
- Why engage in socio-cultural research around sport and physical activity when the calls for evidence-based research on health interventions are more visible than ever? Who needs such critical knowledge(s) in the current society where economic resources devoted to research are becoming scarce? What impact can qualitative research on physically active bodies have on the contemporary culture? These are questions many of us in sport sociology struggle to answer in order to justify and legitimate our field. In this talk, I reflect on these questions through and against my own poststructuralist research on health and physical activity. I draw from Michel Foucault’s technologies and Gilles Deleuze’s rhizomatic philosophy to examine possible ‘relevances’ for socio-cultural research on physical activity. More precisely, I employ Deleuze’s concepts of assemblange and Body without Organs to examine how the moving body might act as a social force to change how health and physical activity are understood.
