Message From President Rich King

Welcome to the homepage of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS). NASSS was organized in 1978 through the efforts of its two main founders (Andrew Yiannakis and Susan Greendorfer) and nineteen other founding members. While initially founded as an organization to explore sociological aspects of play, games, and sport, the breadth of contemporary NASSS scholarship is also now informed by a variety of interdisciplinary areas that include critical race theories, cultural studies, feminisms, qualitative approaches, and queer theories, among others. NASSS scholars do a range of work that focuses on topics as diverse as sport and aging, the body, disability, education, extreme sports, fandom, heterosexism, human rights, media, medicine and health, politics, racism(s), sexism(s), risk, state intervention, the urban condition, visual and material culture, and youth sport. If you are interested in the sociological analysis of sport and/or if you do not see your focus area included in this list, we urge you to become involved in NASSS, either by submitting articles to our official journal, the Sociology of Sport Journal, by attending our annual conference, or by joining NASSS. I encourage you to learn more about NASSS, its mission, and membership by browsing the various topics at the left.

The coming year promises to be most exciting. In the very near future, NASSS will solicit nominations for our upcoming elections. Look for an announcement from Billy Hawkins, the Election Committee Chair in the very near future. If you would like to volunteer to run for an office or would like to nominate someone else to run, you are encouraged to contact one of the Election Committee members or Executive Board Members. At the same time, planning has begun for the 2008 NASSS Conference, which will be 5-8 November in Denver, Colorado. President-elect and Program Committee Chair, Robert Rinehart has assembled an outstanding Program Planning Committee that has set about identifying the theme and potential speakers for the Conference. Further information about Conference plans will be forthcoming in the near future. Finally, if I can be of service to you, do not hesitate to contact me over the course of the year.
